De acuerdo con la Asociación Americana de Psiquiatría, dos tercios de los transtornos de la salud mental se desencadena antes de los 24 años. Este dato debe hacernos reflexionar sobre el rol preventivo que tienen las escuelas para la salud mental.
Existe numerosa evidencia científica sobre el impacto positivo de programas socioemocionales ecolares que permiten a los estudiantes y a los adultos desarrrollar habilidades para manejar el estrés y establecer vínculos positivos que protegen la salud mental. Sin embargo, en nuestro país parece ser que los colegios viven en un estado de estrés crónico y convivencia muy deteriorada. En estos contextos es muy dificil que puedan ocurrir procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje de calidad. El aprendizaje socioemocional no es un adicional al aprendizaje académico, es un pilar para que este ocurra.
Es urgente establecer medidas para reducir el estrés en las escuelas y formar a los profesores y futuros profesores en estrategias para favorecer el desarrollo socioemocional en sus estudiantes.
